| The Timbales are the fire in a Latin rhythm section. Timbales were invented in Cuba where there was once a shortage of commercially made drums. Metal oil and water barrels were an acceptable substitute. 2 different size barrels + 2 goatskins = a pair of Timbales. Today they fulfill an important place in a Latin or Salsa band The player plays a cowbell, or doubletime stick part (cascara), on the side of the Timbale while playing accents with the other hand. The Timbale solo is often the loudest most exciting drum solo of the evening. The full setup includes Timbales, a Bass Drum, a Cowbell, a Chacha bell, and a Cymbal for accenting. |
