This Steel Pan from Trinidad is perhaps the quintisential Caribbean drum. At one time, oil was delivered in 55 gallon steel barrels. After some musical person discovered that the barrels made different pitches as they got dented, they heated and hammered flat spots on them that played specific pitches. The music can be beautiful. Here in St. Thomas there are several Steel Pan groups, some affiliated with schools and churches.
