This set of Rada Drums from Haiti would be used for Vodou ceremonies. Rada is a benevolent popular branch of the religion and has nothing to do with black magic or dolls. The small drum plays a fast-paced steady stacatto rhythm providing the energy, the medium drum plays a part that supports the dancers, and the large drum beats the spirit into the head of the persons getting possessed. Due to the polyrhythmic disjointed nature of the rhythms, each drum requires a separate player. The pace and rhythms are directed by the Houngon or Vodou Priest using a sacred rattle.
