| The Cuica is from Brasil, although its early ancestors were from Africa. This unusual drum is not beaten, but is played using friction against a thin bamboo stick protruding from the head inside the drum. The squeaking sound can be controlled by a good player, both by rubbing the stick and using a finger or thumb to apply pressure to the head (thereby changing the pitch). Complex rhythms and even melodies are possible. Listen for it in Brasillian Samba music. |
