This is a professional pair of Bongo Drums. Tradition dictates that the small bongo (known as ‘macho’) should always be headed with the skin of a male animal, and the large drum 'hembra', should be from a female animal. The bongo player or “bongosero” in a salsa group would play bongos to spice up the rhythm in some parts of a tune and swich to a hand-held cowbell to outline the beat during syncopated “jam” or “descarga" sections. Real bongo players hold the drums tightly between their knees, but may stand up to play the cowbell.
