The Bata Drums consist of a set of 3 double-headed drums used for traditional sacred music in Nigeria and Benin (W. Africa). Santeria is the modern adaptation of the religion and has spread throughout the Caribbean, to Cuba, Miami and New York. The polyrhythmic interlocking rhythms drive devotees into a state of possession. The drums are “owned” by Shango, god of thunder and lightning who makes drummers thunder when they play. This the largest of the set and is called “Ila Ilu” which means "mother drum". .
